Challenge

Maum Market's debut and finale pop-up event along Hayes Street embodied Hayes Valley's complex journey toward pedestrian-focused urban spaces. Set against the backdrop of ongoing discussions about the neighborhood's car-free future, Maum Market along side other local organizations aimed to collaborate and demonstrate the vibrant potential of shared community spaces while navigating the delicate balance of stakeholder needs - from accessibility and emergency services to business operations and resident concerns.

Approach

Through photo and video documentation, we sought to capture how our temporary market served as a proving ground for sustainable urban transformation, showcasing both the opportunities and challenges of reimagining city spaces. The goal was to highlight the diverse ways people experienced and accessed the market, the seamless integration of safety measures, and most importantly, the community's resilience in adapting to change while preserving the unique character that makes Hayes Valley special.
